Whiles growing up, asking me what i would like to be in the future was always a hard question for me to answer. This was because i was interested in one thing now and the next moment i was interested in another. It looked like i could never make a choice. The only thing that i consistently did was reading and watching television. Usually when people ask you what you are going to be in the future, they expect you to choose a career based on your talents or skills that come naturally to you. But if you are stuck in a situation what you couldn't identify what you were good at like me, there was a problem because lets face it, watching television and reading is not a talent. So what is talent?
I have tried defining talent and here is my definition "Talent is the ability to do something so well people try to emulate that same thing but they can't". As i grow up i have realised that the excessive reading and television watching that i did as a kid has influenced a lot of my choices as to what to do with my life. Apparently, reading a lot expands your vocabulary and makes you an above average communicator. I enjoy enlightening conversation and debating not because i am controversial but i always wanted to hear others view. Therefore back in my college days i was frequently called upon to speak, make presentations and do a lot of public speaking. As a teacher, i get to talk almost everyday which i think is good training if i want to build a career in anything communications related.
Don't really be bothered if you do not know what your talent is. Just experiment with as many hobbies and activities as possible. Definitely one of those hobbies may become an interest and when you're willing to put in the time and efforts to develop your interest you will be blown away by how good you will become at that particular interest. If that hobby or interest solves a need or a societal problem, people will be willing to pay you to put you interest to work. This is how you gradually carve a niche for yourself.. The interesting part is that hobby might not even be your 'talent' but because you were willing to put energy, time and effort into it. You will excel more than those who call that particular interest their talent. Hard work will forever trump talent.
I opened this blogger account in August of last year and after my first post, i never posted till May this year.. I developed cold feet because i felt no one would be interested in what i wanted to blog about. But i have heard many times that "to be a good writer, just write". I applied it to my situation that is "to be a good blogger just blog" and after blogging consistently for the past one and half months, i have began to see a change. A month ago, writing a blog post took me 6 hours. This blog post took me 5 hours 30 minutes.
